Departure of Nicolas Crampé
Arriving on January 1, 2025, Nicolas Crampé left the CRM-CNRS (IRL3457) on December 31, 2025.
He worked with Luc Vinet, a professor at Université de Montréal at the Laboratoire de physique mathématique. He also had the opportunity to collaborate with Quentin Labriet, a post-doctoral researcher, and Lucia Morey, a post-doctoral researcher from Luc Vinet’s team. Pierre-Antoine Bernard, with whom Nicolas Crampé has worked since his master’s internship, defended his doctorate in June 2025, and they continued their collaboration.

Presentation at Laval University of Franco-Quebec Cooperation Tools in Mathematics
On December 4, 2025, the director of the IRL traveled to the mathematics department of Laval University in Quebec for a presentation on collaboration opportunities between France and Quebec in mathematics.
These numerous opportunities are offered notably by the CNRS, the Consulate General of France in Quebec, and the Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM) thanks to a grant from the Fonds de recherche du Québec.
Geometry(ies) at Collège Stanislas
Emmanuel Royer gave two lectures on the theme of geometries. One on November 19 for second and first-year students focused on the history of Euclid’s fifth postulate and the (long) birth of so-called non-Euclidean geometries. The other, aimed at final-year students and linked to the teaching of philosophy, also started from Euclid’s fifth postulate to invite reflection on the axiomatization of mathematics.
The topics presented were based on the document available for download and a short bibliography of the texts used to prepare these presentations is available at the end of the text available for download (which is not the text of the lectures)
The CNRS, the CRM, and Tools for Franco-Quebec Cooperation in Mathematics
The Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) in France and the Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM) in Quebec have been associated since 2011 to co-direct an International Research Laboratory (IRL) in mathematics: the CRM-CNRS.
On October 20 and 21, a delegation from the CNRS composed of Christophe BESSE, director of the National Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Their Interactions (Insmi, CNRS-Mathematics), Frédéric HÉRAU, deputy scientific director of Insmi in charge of Europe and international affairs, Andrea DESSEN, director of the CNRS office in Canada, and Suzie BRONNER, scientific cooperation officer at the same office, visited its most attractive international laboratory in mathematics, the CRM-CNRS.
Visit to the IRL Takuvik
Takuvik is an international research laboratory (IRL3376), a partnership between the CNRS, Sorbonne University in France, and Laval University in Quebec (Canada) led by Philippe Archambault.
The objective of the unit is to understand the impact of current environmental disturbances of climatic and anthropogenic origin on Arctic, marine, and terrestrial ecosystems and geosystems.
On October 23 and 24, 2025, Takuvik organized its annual seminar. At the invitation of Philippe Archambault, the director of CRM-CNRS participated in the seminar on Thursday, the 23rd, with the aim of exploring collaboration possibilities, particularly on themes related to oceanography.
The CRM-CNRS Hosts the Mathematics Directorate of CNRS
The mission of the CRM-CNRS, an international research laboratory in mathematics resulting from a partnership between the CNRS in France and the Centre de recherches mathématiques in Quebec, is simple yet ambitious: to develop relationships between France and Quebec in all areas of mathematics. On a daily basis, mathematicians from France based in the laboratory in Montreal invent and discover new mathematics with their colleagues from Quebec.
The life of the laboratory also involves regularly meeting the women and men who enable these discoveries and inventions by working to animate and coordinate mathematics. Thus, the CRM-CNRS had the honor of receiving earlier this week Professor Christophe BESSE, director of the Institut national des sciences mathématiques et de leurs interactions, and his deputy scientific director in charge of Europe and international affairs, Professor Frédéric HÉRAU, accompanied by Andréa DESSEN, director of the CNRS office in Canada, and Suzie BRONNER, her cooperation officer.
Conferences at Collège Stanislas
For the second consecutive year, members of the CRM-CNRS will offer conferences to middle and high school students at Collège Stanislas, a French institution abroad in the network of Agence pour l’enseignement français à l’étranger.

Isabelle Chalendar co-recipient of the G. de B. Robinson Prize 2025
The Canadian Mathematical Society has announced that Isabelle Chalendar is the recipient of the 2025 edition of the G. de B. Robinson Prize along with Jonathan R. Partington (University of Leeds) for their joint paper, “Phase Retrieval on Circles and Lines,” published in the Canadian Mathematical Bulletin (67:4, 2024, pp 927-935).
The G. de B. Robinson Prize was established to reward the publication of excellent papers in the Canadian Journal of Mathematics (CJM) and the Canadian Mathematical Bulletin (CMB) and to encourage the submission of the highest quality papers to these journals. It is named in honor of Gilbert de Beauregard Robinson, the third president in the history of the CMS. Along with H.S.M. Coxeter, he founded the Canadian Journal of Mathematics (CJM), of which he was editor-in-chief for 30 years.

Meeting with the Vice-Rector of Université du Québec à Trois Rivières
On Monday, September 22, 2025, the director of CRM-CNRS met with the Vice-Rector for Research and Development of the Université du Québec à Trois Rivières, Sébastien Charles.
The meeting was an opportunity to express the importance of the investment from CNRS and the Fonds de recherche du Québec for Franco-Quebec cooperation in mathematics.
The main tools of this cooperation were presented:
- the hosting at CRM-CNRS of scientists working in France “assigned on delegation” thanks to joint funding from CNRS and the employer of the assigned person;
- the support program for the international laboratory of the Fonds de recherche du Québec in four pillars:
- hosting of mathematicians coming from France,
- long-term research stays in France for CRM members,
- participation in scientific events in France by CRM members,
- research internships for students.
The website presenting all cooperation opportunities in mathematics between France and Canada was introduced.
