The Lab

Mission

The CRM-CNRS International Research Laboratory (IRL No. 3457) is a French-Canadian mathematics research laboratory whose mission is to promote scientific collaborations between France and Québec across all areas of mathematics.

To achieve this mission, it

  • hosts mathematicians from France in Québec for stays of any length, including long-term stays ;
  • encourages visits to France by mathematicians from Québec ;
  • publicizes in both France and Québec the many opportunities for collaboration.

Location

The offices of the CRM-CNRS International Research Laboratory (IRL 3457) are located on the campus of Université de Montréal, on the northern slope of Mount Royal in the Côte-des-Neiges district of Montréal (Québec, Canada).

Mathematicians from France visiting the CRM-CNRS may be hosted at any of the partner universities of its Québec partner, the Centre de recherches mathématiques.

Partners

The CRM-CNRS International Research Laboratory (IRL 3457) is a joint initiative of the French National Centre for Scientific Research and the Centre de recherches mathématiques in Québec.

The French National Centre for Scientific Research

The Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) was founded in 1939. “ Identify, carry out, or have carried out all research of interest to science as well as to the technological, social, and cultural progress of the country. ” These are the missions entrusted to the CNRS by the French government since 1982. With more than eleven hundred laboratories throughout France and over thirty-three thousand people working in the service of science, the CNRS covers the full scientific spectrum and fosters dialogue across disciplines. It has also established international research laboratories worldwide.

The National Institute for Mathematical Sciences (Insmi) sets the CNRS research strategy in mathematics and coordinates the activities and projects of its associated laboratories. Since 2010, the French government has assigned Insmi “ national missions of animation, structuring, and coordination in the field of mathematics. ”

The Centre de recherches mathématiques

Founded in 1968, the Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM) is a pioneer in Canada. Both a high-level scientific programming institute and a network of thirteen laboratories covering the full mathematical spectrum, it welcomes more than two thousand five hundred mathematicians each year, mainly for its thematic programs.

In partnership with the Institut des sciences mathématiques, it also contributes to doctoral and postdoctoral training as well as to the dissemination of mathematics.

Its founding universities are: Université de Montréal, Concordia University, Université Laval, McGill University, Université du Québec à Montréal, and Université de Sherbrooke. Its academic partners are HEC Montréal, the University of Ottawa, and Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières.

The Centre de recherches mathématiques receives support from the Fonds de recherche du Québec for the international research laboratory.

Successive Directors

The CRM-CNRS International Research Laboratory was created on January 1, 2011, through an agreement signed by the French National Centre for Scientific Research and Université de Montréal.

Its successive directors have been the mathematicians:

  • Laurent Habsieger, from January 2011 to August 2015 ;
  • Emmanuel Giroud, from September 2015 to August 2019 ;
  • Olivier Lafitte, from September 2019 to August 2024 ;
  • Emmanuel Royer, since September 2024.
