Philippe Eyssidieux, after a thesis in 1994 at the University of Paris-Sud under the supervision of Ngaiming Mok, was a CNRS Researcher at the University of Toulouse III from 1995 to 2005 and has been a Professor at the University of Grenoble-Alpes since 2005. He has supervised 7 theses, including those of Julien Keller (Professor at UQAM) and Thibaut Delcroix (Associate Professor HDR at the University of Montpellier, France).
His work focuses on the interface between Algebraic Geometry and Complex Analytic Geometry, with a particular interest in transcendental methods, that is, analytic methods. The two main themes under which his work can be categorized are the applications of degenerate complex Monge-Ampère equations, for example, to singular Kähler-Einstein metrics (in collaboration with the French school of pluripotential Sébastien Boucksom, Vincent Guedj, Ahmed Zeriahi, all disciples or even students of Jean-Pierre Demailly) and non-abelian Hodge theory (in degree 1) in the sense of Corlette-Simpson and Gromov-Schoen, for which he has notably developed the consequences by proving with Ludmil Katzarkov, Tony Pantev, and Mohan Ramachandran the linear Shafarevich conjecture. In order to study the general case of the holomorphic convexity Shafarevich conjecture, which he has reduced to a statement about the fundamental group and other problems related to uniformization in several complex variables, he has been dedicating himself for 10 years to the study of Serre’s problem of characterizing the fundamental groups of smooth algebraic complex varieties among groups of finite presentation and to understanding as much as possible the examples, among which the quotients of mapping class groups by powers of Dehn twists, in the exploration of which he collaborates with Louis Funar and Marco Boggi.
